The diagnosis of Lyme
disease is a clinical diagnosis. Physicians must make the decision
based on their clinical judgment after considering many factors.
It is difficult to diagnose because the symptoms often mimic the
symptoms of other illnesses. It is important that you consult with
your physician if you suspect that you have been bitten or if you
have any of the symptoms described above. If you have a rash, take
a photograph of it because it may be gone by the time you can see
your physician. Keep a daily log of your symptoms on your calendar
and show this to your physician.
Blood tests for
Lyme disease are not 100% reliable. Studies have indicated that
the tests are most reliable when given 4 to 6 weeks after the
initial bite.
Other tests are
under development. It is best that you and your physician discuss
the alternatives available.
