Beauty Salons &
Barber Shops
In 1984, after
the State Department of Public Health discontinued its inspection program,
the TAHD adopted its own local regulations that provide for the licensing
and inspection of Beauty Salons and Barber Shops. These facilities are
inspected annually or as necessary to enforce the provisions of the
regulation. In recent years the barber shop and beauty salon image has
changed giving rise to unisex salons with a variety of services including
nail treatments, tanning booths, facial treatments and hair removal. Our
inspection includes a check to see that the staff is properly licensed as
well as to ensure that the business is clean and properly maintained. All
equipment must be cleaned and sanitized in accord with the provisions of
the regulation. Whenever a shop is newly constructed or remodeled a copy
of the plans must be submitted to the Health District for review and
approval prior to the start of work. As of October 2000 Nail Technicians
must have an occupational license obtained from the State of Connecticut.

The application will not be accepted with the appropriate
